What do we do?
The main subject of our project is strictly connected with sustainable tourism and trade.
But what is it actually?

Rozwój społeczeństw konsumpcyjnych i degradacja środowiska w skali globalnej, np. zmiany klimatu, spowodowały potrzebę i konieczność zmiany myślenia o ochronie środowiska.

Stąd pomysł i idea naszego międzynarodowego projektu.

The idea of sustainable development first appeared as a result of great increase in economic and industrial development causing depletion of natural resources and, to a great effect, also degradation of natural habitat. Harmful pollution effects on human body have been scientifically proved. That is why more environmentally friendly techniques have been introduced as well as environmentally friendly  techniques have been developed decreasing economic and industrial development in most of the endangered areas in the same way.
The development of consumer societies and the degradation of natural habitat in general, e.g. climate changes, etc. have caused an irresistible need and necessity to think about the environment. And that is how the idea of sustainable development appeared.  The issue of sustainable development is to notice environmental restrictions and limitations, to satisfy all human needs without violation of ecological balance and with elementary processes sustaining life on Earth preserved.
Not much has been done to spread the idea of sustainable development so far. That is why it is so important and essential for young people to discuss and fully understand the problem. And that is where the idea of our international project has come from.
Lots of actions have been taken on behalf of sustainable development all over the world including  Poland for many years. Despite failures, people are still trying to figure out some conceptions of sustainable development.

Ważniejsze działania podejmowane w Polsce w ostatnich 15 latach na rzecz rozwoju zrównoważonego.

The most important actions taken throughout the last 15 years on behalf of sustainable development:

·         1987 – Polish Ecological Club for the first time introduces a plan of our country development based on sustainable development
·         1991 – Polish Government accepts ecodevelopment as a fundamental principal of our country general development
·         1997 – a legacy stating that our country does everything to protect natural habitat according to the principal of sustainable development appears in the Constitution of Poland
·         2001 – the Parliament enacts Environment Protection Law is consent with EU Law where the exact definition of sustainable development is included.

Problem rozwoju zrównoważonego dotyczy kilku dziedzin, np. energetyka, rolnictwo, transport itp.

My zajmiemy się rozwojem zrównoważonym turystyki.

Chcielibyśmy pokazać jakie walory turystyczne posiada Polska, nasz region czyli Wielkopolska oraz zbadać jak wygląda rozwój zrównoważony turystyki na przykładzie Skorzęcina - małego ośrodka turystycznego w okolicach Gniezna.

The directions of our actions on behalf of sustainable development may be different in different parts of the world depending on the level of social and economical development. It’s with regard to countries as well as districts, provinces, communities, housing estates, families and single people – with regard to ourselves.
The idea of sustainable development concerns not just one but a few spheres of life, e.g. energetics, agriculture, transport and many others but we are going to concentrate mainly on sustainable.
With great pleasure, we would like to show the value of Poland, with our region – Great Poland in particular, as a tourist attraction and examine what sustainable tourism looks like here. We will set Skorzęcin, a small tourist resort near Gniezno, as an example.

- zdrowy tryb życia w harmonii z przyrodą, otwartość i tolerancja w kontaktach z innymi nacjami i kulturami

- zachowanie zasobów przyrody oraz ochronę kultury i tradycji społeczności lokalnych

- udział ludności lokalnej w podejmowaniu decyzji, które dotyczą rozwoju regionu

- rozwój lokalny i tworzenie miejsc pracy

zmniejszanie ilości zużywanej wody, energii, wytwarzanych odpadów, ścieków i zanieczyszczeń powietrza

Tourism is one of the most important and the most rapidly developing branch of the world’s economy. It develops to the greatest extend in geographically and historically attractive areas with clean rivers, lakes, seas, beaches, forests, meadows, mountains and interesting cities.
Tourism contributes to the usage of natural resources and polluting the environment. Nobody wants to spend their holidays by contaminated coasts surrounded by huge hotels or in the mountains full of litter.
Research carried by the world’s Tourist Organization indicates that the amount of litter and sewage has increased twice in the last ten years and the number of areas with tourist attractions has doubled.

A term called sustainable tourism – tourism which is environmentally friendly has been promoted lately. The most important issues are:
·         Healthy lifestyle in harmony with nature
·         Openness and tolerance in contacts between communities and nations
·         Keeping natural resources untouched
·         Protecting and cherishing the culture and customs of local communities
·         Involving local communities into making important decisions with regards to their regions
·         Local development and creating new job vacancies
·         Decreasing the usage of water as well as energy supplies, sewage, industrial waste and fumes

The most common form of sustainable tourism is ecotourism. Fans of it,  people who are sensitive to the beauty of nature, travel around to admire magnificent views and wildlife but also find out more about the customs, traditions and culture of local communities.
Another form of spending free time is agriculture. Such farms enable people to see advantages and disadvantages of living in rural areas (villages, countryside).  Tourists who decide to spend time in these places can see and are sometimes involved in day-to-day jobs of such families. They’ve got a chance to learn  more about simple village life.

Pojezierze Pomorskie to przede wszystkim pas plaż nad Morzem Bałtyckim.

The Pomeranian Lake District is mainly a long, sandy Baltic Coast.
Woliński National Park, covering a large part of Wolin Island which used to be a big harbour and a trade centre of great importance even back in IX century. This National Park gives protection to all sorts of different trees and birds. One of them is the white-tailed eagle also known as the sea eagle which can be seen in the Polish ensign.
In the summer, you can take part in a special Viking Festivals there.

Łeba – miejscowość turystyczno- wypoczynkowa z unikalną w tej części Europy atrakcją – ruchomymi wydmami.

Łeba – a town located in the Pomeranian Lake District with its absolutely unique attraction – moving sand dunes.

Władysławowo – duży port rybacki, ośrodek wypoczynkowy z piękną plażą i miejsce przygotowań polskich olimpijczyków.

Władysławowo – a big fishing harbour, a holiday resort with a beautiful beach, a place where Polish athletes train for the Olympics.

Hel -  to półwysep o dł. 34 km i szer. Od 150 m do 3 km

Hel – a town located on the tip of the Hel Peninsula, some 34km long and 150m to 3km wide.

Pojezierze Mazurskie to chyba jedna z najpiękniejszych krain w Polsce... bogata w jeziora, ptactwo, lasy, zwierzęta i przepiękne krajobrazy. Miasta oddzielone są od siebie o 20-30 km. Stolicą krainy tysiąca jezior nazywane jest Giżycko. Latem to centrum sportów wodnych, a dzięki bogatej sieci kanałów można stąd dotrzeć wodą do przepięknych zakątków o nienaruszonej przyrodzie.

The Masurian Lake District is probably one of the most beautiful parts of Poland. It’s rich in lakes, forests, unique birds and other animals as well as in spectacular views. Towns are separated from one another by about 20 – 30km. The capital of ‘A Thousand Lakes Land’ is Giżycko. In the summer it’s a sports centre and thanks to many man-made water channels one can get to lots of tiny corners of untouched nature.

Mikołajki

Mikołajki

Polska posiada mnóstwo wspaniałych miejsc, które warto zobaczyć. Część z nich nadal zachwyca swoją nienaruszoną i dziką przyrodą.

Poland has inevitably lots of gorgeous places worth seeing. Some of them still attract tourists attention through their wilderness and natural beauty. That’s why it’s so essential for everyone to keep it like this for younger generations. Human interference into nature must be thoughtful and tourism must set a good example of balanced development.

What’s the Great Poland like?
How does tourism develop here?
What’s worth seeing here?
Does tourism in our area go along with the assumption based on sustainable development set by the European Union?
We will try to give you a detailed answer to these questions and also examine our local tourist resort – Skorzęcin from the point of view.

The District of Gniezno
Excellent location, royal tradition

The District of Gniezno is the area of 1254 square
kilometres located in the Wielkopolska Region - one of the largest Polish regions in the west. The district is the second administrative level in Polish local authorities system. The District of Gniezno covers ten communes of different areas. The Capital of the District is Gniezno - the first historical Capital of Poland.

The title indicates the origins of the area. These are the beginnings of the Polish country. First five Polish kings were crowned here an the first archbishopric was created here.

The Gniezno’s riches of nature encourage active pursuits. Many lakes, forests and post-glacial landscape, all provide excellent conditions for hiking, cycling and water tourism. If you are fed up with monotony, if you would like to try extreme sports or be at one with nature, go fishing, hunting or just go on a walk, there are few places as suitable as this land.

It is easy to get to Gniezno because of its location. Poznań Lawica Airport - the capital of the Wielkopolska Region, 50 km away from Gniezno, offers flights to Warsaw, Frankfurt, Munich, Copenhagen, Dublin, London (Luton and Stansted airports), Liverpool, Stockholm (Skavsta airport) all over the year. You can reach the final destination by taking a train, car or a bus. Main international and national roads cross in the District of Gniezno, and it is possible to travel by one of many Euro City and Inter City trains because of the convenient connection from Gniezno to Poznań. Those trains connect all the biggest Polish cities with Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Bratislava, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Vilnius, Moscow etc. Euro Night Warsaw  Cologne provides comfortable connection towards Paris, Brussels, London and many cities in Germany.

People interested in new forms of leisure activities are encouraged to take a ride on the historic Gniezno Narrow-gauge Railway. Along the track there are many historic buildings. The railway has its terminus in the beautiful Powidzki Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Gniezno Narrow-gauge Railway offers various tourist journeys on request. The maximum capacity of the train is 250 people.

Tourist events can be held in various places. We have a complete offer with catering and other attractions we provide to a picnic. The offer is directed at individuals, companies, tourist agencies, schools and other institutions, people who would like to have a great time outdoors. You can choose between steam and diesel engines.
Some sacred and historical monuments of a thousand years old, can still be found here. Gniezno is the main attraction of one of the most known and popular tourist route in the country  The Piast Route. While following the route one can feel that wind of history and bring back the old times. Tourists will find here numerous sacred buildings, palaces, manor houses, museums full of unique exhibits and regional houses cultivating tradition of the area.
Skorzęcin is about 20 kilometers away from Gniezno - the first polish capital.
It is one of the biggest cities in Great Poland founded in 6th century. The old cathedral standing on Lech Hill is a must for all history-lovers. The cathedral is home to a silver coffin containing St. Wojciech remains. Worth seeing is the Museum of Polish State Foundations. Remember to take a picture together with a sculpture of Bolesław Chrobry, one of Polish kings. Not away from Gniezno there is Biskupin. You may find there one of the most attractive archeological sites in Poland. Biskupin castle was discovered accidentally in 1933 by a local teacher Walenty Szwajcer. It is an amazing history lesson. We may experience the way of life of our  great- ancestors, visit an archeological reserve and an exhibition.

Ostrów Lednicki, a small village, is located a little bit closer to Gniezno than Biskupin. It is situated on the edge of a landscape park, which contains a vast amount of adventures for tourists. There are some remains of building dated back to Mieszko the First times (the first ruler of Poland), an archeological reserve, a prince’s castle and temple remains. There is also an outstandingly beautiful  ethnographic park. The area is rich in monumental windmills.

Lednicki Landscape Park is located in eastern Great Poland. It was founded in 1988 to protect the land around Lednickie Lake, which is a cradle of Polish state. The park covers the area of 7652,48 hectares (the lakes cover about 7% of the area).

It is time to finish our trip around the beautiful sights of Great Poland. Let’s look again at Skorzęcin.

Skorzęcin
 – advantages and disadvantages of tourism
It’s a small holiday resort situated in the forest, where more and more cottages are
built. We destroy the nature, cut down trees and we do it all on purpose, just for our
own well-being and comfort.
This causes a great decrease in the amount of animals inhabiting this area
including birds

Years ago only wooden cottages were built. They composed beautifully with the nature – one could have a closer contact with it.
There were fewer holidaymakers coming over.
The place was clean and peaceful.

The beach is big, but the photo taken from bird’s eye view shows sandbacks and a considerable decrease of water, the lake is more polluted than ever before, sometimes contamination reaches such a high level that swimming in it must be either limited or even completely forbidden.

Disadvantages of tourism in the area:
- too many tourists coming over every year
- commercialization
- unability to rest in harmony with nature
- dirty beach
- lots of litter produced and left over by holidaymakers

-         More and more vehicles coming over
-         The beginning of the weekend
is an endless traffic jam formed by the ones who want to enter          the resort
- There has been a fee issued for entering the area which is supposed to limit the number of tourists coming here for weekends
- The air is more and more polluted

- It used to be
        - calm
-         peaceful
-         quiet
-         One could take delight in the beauty of the nature

In Skorzęcin one can:
-cycle– short route (6km), long route (20km)
-         walk – lots of footpaths
       -sunbathe
-         dive
-         canoe
There are also many attractions for children
I encourage you to visit our resort and go on a sightseeing tour around the area. I hope that the outstanding surroundings, marvelous sights and rich cultural inheritance will satisfy your needs. I believe that you will find the stay at our leisure centre both relaxing and amusing!

Niedzięgiel Lake: Poland, Great Poland, Gniezno District, Witkowo municipality. It covers the area of 641,3 hectares (including an island covering 3,6 hectares). It is 6 kilometers long and 2,7 kilometers wide. Maximum depth: 21,6 meters. The shoreline is well-developed with numerous bays. The banks are quite low and flat, western parts are covered by marshes, northern shoreline is predominantly covered with forest. The lake is the source of Noteć Zachodnia river. Skorzęcin resort is right between Niedzięgiel Lake and Białe Lake (White Lake). There are other villages, e.g. Wylatkowo, Charbin and Wiekowo around the lake.

Skorzęcin: it is the biggest holiday resort in Great Poland. It is located between two lakes: NIedzięgiel and Białe and surrounded by a beautiful forest. Tourists find peace and serenity strolling along crystal-clear waters of both lakes and breathing surprisingly clear air. Throughout the year Skorzęcin offers its services to those who seek refugee from the hustle and bustle of everyday life in cities. Excellent fishing conditions and woods full of mushrooms allure people from all over Poland.
Nowhere else but in Skorzęcin tourists may experience  a close contact with nature enjoying high standards of accommodation. This holiday resort is home to lovers of extreme water sports. Riding horses, cycling routes and beautiful paths are all at your feet.

SKORZĘCIN IN 1965

And this is what the place looks like today – a day before the summer season starts

 puste plaże...

Empty beaches...

zabudowa w przeważającej części staje się murowana...

Majority of buildings made of brick...

coraz więcej powstaje punktów handlowych...

More and more market stalls...

Jednak widoczny jest znaczny ubytek wody, w porównaniu z ubiegłymi latami....

Considerable decrease of water in the lake in comparison to previous years which is really worrying...

mogliśmy nawet spokojnie pograć w piłkę....

We could even play football on the beach...

The number of new buildings is growing fast, they compose beautifully with green areas and are located very close to the beach...

Jeziora Powidzkiego Parku Krajobrazowego to naturalny skarb regionu konińskiego.
All the lakes within Powidz Landscape Park are a natural treasure of Konin region. These, filled with water coming from an old glacier, lakes attract thousands of swim and water sports lovers from Poznań and the whole Great Poland. There are also German and Dutch holidaymakers  visiting this place more and more willingly.
What  worries us most, however, is the level of water in these lakes. It  is decreasing at killing pace and their area is growing smaller too. Metal frameworks of piers and jetties which used to be immersed in water  frighten everyone with their looks now. The level of water in the lakes is sometimes not even high enough to reach the shore

Żeby wejść do wody, trzeba przejść 60 metrów. Jedno z jezior - małe i płytkie Anastazewo - prawie całkowicie zanikło.
For the last two years the area of the beach of  OSiR Witkowo on the lake of Niedzięgiel has trebled. To get into the water one has to walk about 60 metres. One of the lakessmall and shallowhas disappeared completely and mud and reeds are the only remains of it.
The beach of Ostrowskie Lake, just next to Przyjezierze, has extended of about 200 metres and the level of water has gone down of about 1,5m. The water doesn’t even touch the nearby jetties  and they all stand still on land. Tourism suffers a lot here and the neighbourhood attracts less and less attention. Also farmers, whose fields are drying up, have incured losses.
When the lakes dwindle  the shore line also disappears. It is extremely dangerous for fish which lose their natural place to breed.

The mine of brown coal in Konin is made responsible for the actual state of affairs of Niedzięgiel Lake. It is an ecological disaster
and the only way of curing this situation is by supplying these areas with water by a pipeline.
The authorities of the coal mine do not want to accept responsibility for this and convince everyone that drought is to blame.

.
Rozwiązaniem będzie budowa rurociągu, który doprowadzi wodę do jezior i uratuje je.
Reaserch shows that  a drastic drop in water level started in 1990s and around 2003 – 2005. That was the time when the coal mine launched the extraction of its new coal deposits. If it does not change in the nearest future the environment will be degraded. Even heavy rainfalls will not reinstate it to its prior state and condition.
The situation of these lakes is dramatic, but the coal mine cannot be closed down as it gives about 5 thousand jobs. We must look for a compromise.
A
solution will be building a pipeline  supplying  the lakes with water and saving them from disappearing.

The city council in Gniezno has been supporting many projects concerning sustainable development.
Their completion is supposed to instil a sense of responsibility for our environment in every single person and in local societies and to show the interdependence of our daily lifestyles and choices and their consequences to the environment.

Pani Małgorzata Kubiś-Drewek jest opiekunem szkolnego Koła Polskiego Towarzystwa Turystyczno-Krajoznawczego Ziemi Gnieźnieńskiej
Mrs Małgorzata Kubiś-Drewek is the head of our school’s  Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society for Gniezno region

Jak ocenia Pani turystykę w naszym regionie?
How would you evaluate tourism in our region?

As a great tourist lover, I must admit that our region is very extraordinary and unique . There are many interesting corners worth visiting during weekends or longer excursions. We have got a lot of hiking trails adjusted to different forms and kinds of tourism like walking, cyclingwaterways (a great number of lakes and rivers) as well as so popular nowadays  nordic walking. In my opinion everyone can easily find something for himself in the area. As permanent inhabitants of Gniezno and its surrounding  we can participate in various forms of active rest both individually  and collectively as there are  lots of  vigorously working  clubs, e.g.  a unit of Polish Tourism and Sightseeing  Society for Gniezno region together  with a cycling section, ‘Horyzont’ Water  Club, ‘Ornak’ Mountain Club and many others.
Do the municipal authorities try to broaden the offer for tourists?

Yes, they certainly do. The authorities of our town and region do their best to extend our offer for both foreign and  Polish tourists what we have been able to notice for the last couple of years.
What, according to you, should be improved  as far as tourism is concerned?
Myślę, że można by pomyśleć nad stworzeniem platformy widokowej, na której można by umieścić plan z zaznaczonymi najważniejszymi zabytkami i budowlami miasta Gniezna.
As for me, we could think of  making a huge vantage platform  where we should place  a plan with the most important monuments of  both historical and artistic value and other structures of our beautiful
Do tourists coming to Gniezno and the surrounding area have  a fabulously rich offerIs this offer  easily available and clear according to you?
Turyści przyjeżdżający do Gniezna i okolic mogą korzystać z szerokiej i różnorodnej oferty. Spośród licznych walorów turystycznych naszego regionu na czoło wysuwają się walory historyczno- religijne związane z początkami państwowości polskiej, chrztem Polski, miejscem spoczynku św. Wojciecha, koronacjami królów Polskich. Podstawowym atutem Gniezna jest bogactwo zabytków o charakterze  sakralnym, np. Katedra Gnieźnieńska, kościół św. Jana, gotycki kościół farny, kościół i klasztor franciszkanów oraz inne. W centrum naszego miasta mamy muzea: Muzeum Archidiecezji Gnieźnieńskiej, Muzeum Początków Państwa Polskiego, a także poza miastem np. Muzeum Pierwszych Piastów na Lednicy.
Prze teren powiatu gnieźnieńskiego przebiega Szlak Piastowski będący jedną z najciekawszych tras turystycznych w Polsce. Atrakcyjnymi punktami na szlaku są: Wielkopolski Park Etnograficzny koło Dziekanowic, Ostrów Lednicki. Mamy także ciekawy skansen miniatur
Tourists coming to Gniezno and its surrounding can enjoy a wide range of various offers. Among lots of tourist values of our region there are a few that come into prominence because of their historical and religious assets connected with the beginning of Polish state, the Baptism of Poland, the place of eternal rest of St Adalbert and Polish kingscoronations. The main trump of Gniezno is its wealth of sacred monuments, e.g. The Cathedral, St. John’s church, the Trinity church, the Franciscan church and their Order and many others.
In the centre of the town, we have museums: The Museum of Gniezno Archdiocesethe Museum of the Beginning of Polish State and outside there is the Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica.
One of the most interesting tourist attractions which runs through the Gniezno county is The Piast Trail with its most interesting point of Wielkopolski Etnographic Park Near Dziekanowice or Ostrów Lednicki. Let’s not forget about an unforgettable  open-air museum of miniatures either.

Among lots of  advantages  of  our county  we cannot pass the diversity of the landscape and the beauty of the nature over in silence, e.g. Lednica Landscape Park and three  forest wildlife  reserves have been established.   Furthermore, there is  also  Puszcza Zielonka Landscape Park situated in the territory of our county which is worth seeing with its  wooden  church route and  Powidz Landscape Park  with a beautiful lake where you can swim, fish, go  sail ing or even canoeing.
We
also have  the International Bike Route called Euroverlo – a link between the north and the south of Europe .

A
very interesting attraction, especially for  young tourists, is  the narrow-gauge railway  which  in the tourist season, takes people from Gniezno to Anastazewo.

Czy Gniezno w pełni wykorzystuje swoje walory turystyczne?
Does Gniezno fully use its tourists assets?

Gniezno doesn’t stray from  the other towns of the region and our country in general in this respect. A whole lot has already been done and improved to bring about an increase of intrest to the first capital of Poland. A  wide offer of hotels, motels and bed and breakfast places together  with cafes, pubs and restaurants are favourable, too.
What is your opinion about Skorzęcin as the biggest holiday resort in our region?
Skorzęcin is a well-known and  an eagerly visited holiday resort in our region.  Its advantages are sandy beaches and clear water. Everyone can find something  interesting for  himself  there. You can either spend your time actively or passivelydepending on the needs and moodThere are numerous walking paths and bike routesThe Powidz Landscape Park was founded in this area in 1988. . It is supposed to protect the beauty of the region, its flora , fauna and the diversified post-glacial relief.
